His two older sisters, Sierra and Sydney, are already shining bright in the Athletes Unlimited Softball League, backed by none other than Major League Baseball itself. This league, which expanded to six teams last year, has become a platform for female athletes to showcase their talent.
Sierra, a four-time All-America at Michigan, is considered one of the greatest college softball players ever. Her stats speak for themselves - an impressive .441 batting average, 82 home runs, and 305 RBIs in just 252 games. She now plays for the Texas Volts, continuing her legacy.
Sydney, a two-time NCAA champion at Oklahoma, was the Big 12 Player of the Year in 2019 and a finalist for the national title. She's not just a player but also an assistant coach at Oregon, proving her dedication to the sport.
And let's not forget the third sister, Sophia, a redshirt sophomore outfielder at Boise State, who's following in her sisters' footsteps.
But what's truly remarkable is how these sisters have inspired Mikey. Growing up, they hit into a small net, and by the time Mikey wanted to improve, there was a full batting cage in their backyard.
"With the similarities between baseball and softball, it was easy for me to want to play baseball after seeing my sisters play," Mikey said.
His sisters saw his potential early on. "We set the foundation for him," Sierra said. "He became a great player himself."
Mikey's journey hasn't been without challenges. A back injury limited his play in his first two minor league seasons. But he bounced back, posting an impressive .821 OPS in 2024.
"I was finally healthy and ready to go in 2024," he said.
This offseason, Mikey has been working on improving his arm strength, lateral quickness, and overall athleticism. He's determined to make it to the big leagues, and with his hard work and the support of his family, it seems only a matter of time.
And this is the part most people miss - the impact of family support. The Romero family has faced challenges, including the loss of their father, Michael, last February after a long battle with cancer. But through it all, they've stuck together, with Melissa, their mother, talking about dropping everything to see Mikey's first game in the majors.
"My parents sacrificed so much for us. Mikey getting to the big leagues would be something special for our family," Sierra said.
