Imagine a world where your phone becomes the key to your entire life, quite literally! Samsung is taking a bold step towards that future with its new Digital Home Key feature. But here's where it gets controversial: they're not just unlocking your phone's potential, they're opening your front door to a whole new world of possibilities.
The Key to Your Front Door
For Android users, unlocking your car with your phone has been a reality for years. But when it comes to your home, it's a different story. You've needed a smart lock or an iPhone with Apple's Home Key to gain access. Now, Samsung is changing the game with its Digital Home Key, an add-on to the Samsung Wallet app. This innovative feature will unlock your front door, provided you have a compatible smart lock.
The magic behind this new feature is Aliro, a smart home protocol developed by the same team behind Matter and Thread. Aliro 1.0 was only recently launched, making Samsung's Digital Home Key the first digital key to support this exciting new standard. And get this - Apple and Google are also on board, committing to support Aliro going forward.
So, how does it work? You'll set up an Aliro-supported lock and then add the digital key to your Samsung Wallet. When you approach your door, you can unlock it by tapping your phone to the lock using NFC or, even better, automatically using ultrawideband, which doesn't require any tapping at all. The options are fully configurable in the lock's dedicated app, giving you ultimate control.
The rollout has already begun, with Samsung Wallet now supporting Digital Home Key on over a dozen devices, including all Samsung Galaxy S models from the S21 onwards, four A-series models, and the Xcover 7 Pro. For now, the feature only supports NFC, but Samsung promises UWB support will be available on compatible devices by April.
The Power of Aliro
While the addition of digital house keys to Samsung Wallet is exciting, the real long-term win for consumers lies with Aliro. Apple's Home Key is a prime example of why this technology is so cool - it just works seamlessly. There's no need for dedicated apps or complicated setups. The information is stored directly on your iPhone, and the lock recognizes it as the correct key. The downside? It only works with iPhones and specific locks.
Aliro solves these issues by adopting an open industry standard. As more manufacturers adopt the Aliro specification, it will work with a wider range of phones and locks. It's developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance, the same group behind Matter and Thread. Tobin Richardson, the president and CEO of CSA, believes Aliro will be the standard that makes digital keys more accessible to everyone.
"By connecting the access control industry directly to leading mobile wallet ecosystems, it delivers a secure, frictionless experience that goes beyond the front door," Richardson said. "Lower integration complexity means faster innovation and shorter time to market. This is how the future of access control gets built."
How Aliro Works
For those curious about the technical side, Aliro is similar to Thread. Devices built on Matter need a way to communicate, and that's where Aliro comes in. It allows Matter devices to communicate securely without using Wi-Fi bandwidth, which can be less secure and clog home routers when too many devices are connected.
Aliro is specifically designed for door locks and digital keys on smartphones. Because it doesn't require an internet connection, it can be used anywhere. The CSA uses asymmetric cryptography to ensure only authorized users can access the system.
Samsung is the first major company to support this standard with a market-ready product, so we're yet to see this technology in action. However, Samsung's partners, including Aqara, Schlage, Ultralok, and Nuki, are expected to release their own Aliro-supported devices in the coming months.
