In a surprising move, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz announced on Monday that he will not pursue a third term in office. Instead, he plans to dedicate his efforts to addressing serious allegations of fraud within the state's welfare system, which has escalated into a significant political issue for him, particularly under pressure from the administration of former President Donald Trump.
Walz, who is 61 years old and has a background as a teacher and coach, took office as governor in 2019. He gained national attention last year when he served as the running mate for former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate in the 2024 election who ultimately lost to Trump.
The Trump administration has recently focused its scrutiny on Walz and the state of Minnesota, especially concerning its sizable population of Somali Americans and immigrants. These allegations of fraud trace back to 2020 and involve non-profit organizations that manage Minnesota's child-care and various social services programs, which rely on federal funding.
A notable development in this ongoing saga came in 2022 when federal prosecutors initiated charges against at least 56 individuals, a process that began during the administration of Trump’s Democratic predecessor, Joe Biden.
In making his announcement, Walz characterized these fraud allegations as a crisis, expressing his desire to shift his focus to resolving these issues rather than engaging in election campaigning. He stated, "Let others worry about the election while I concentrate on the work ahead of us," with the next election set for November.
"For the past several years, an organized group of criminals has attempted to exploit the generosity of our state," Walz remarked in his statement. "As we make headway in combating the fraudsters, we are now witnessing an organized group of political figures trying to take advantage of this crisis."
He further criticized Trump and other Republican figures, claiming they seek to transform Minnesota into a harsher, less welcoming place. The Trump administration, noted for its commitment to deporting more immigrants than any previous government, has specifically targeted Minnesota for investigations, frequently alleging extensive fraud perpetrated by non-profits serving immigrant populations in the welfare sector.
In 2022, federal authorities charged the non-profit organization Feeding Our Future with fraud related to COVID-19 relief funds meant to provide meals for children. Interestingly, while many of those who have pleaded guilty thus far are Somali Americans, the founder of the organization is a white American woman who was convicted of fraud last year.
These prosecutions have continued under Trump's administration, which has consistently lambasted both the state’s Somali communities and prominent figures like Walz and Representative Ilhan Omar, a Somali-American Democrat representing a district in Minneapolis.
On Friday, the Trump administration issued a statement portraying their efforts as a "relentless assault to dismantle the massive fraud empires built in Minnesota under the oversight of incompetent Democrats like Tim Walz and his Radical Left supporters." On the same day, Walz signed an executive order establishing a new investigative unit dedicated to tackling fraud.
Although this scandal emerged over three years ago, it has regained attention recently, partly due to a viral 42-minute video released on December 26 by Nick Shirley, a pro-Trump influencer who has previously met with the President at the White House. This video claims to reveal widespread fraud occurring at child-care centers within Minnesota’s Somali community and has garnered over 138 million views.
In a provocative post on social media, Shirley proclaimed, "I ENDED TIM WALZ."
