A stunning heist at the Louvre Museum left the crown of Empress Eugenie in a state of disarray, but the museum assures us it's a tale of resilience and restoration.
The crown, a symbol of French imperial grandeur, was dropped by fleeing thieves during a daring raid last October. Despite being crushed, the museum declares it "nearly intact" and fully restorable.
But here's where it gets controversial: the thieves managed to steal an astonishing 88 million euros worth of jewels, yet they left behind this precious crown. Why?
The museum has released the first images of the crown since the theft, revealing a badly deformed headpiece. The thieves attempted to remove it through a narrow hole they created in its glass case, but the crown's intricate design proved challenging.
The crown, adorned with 56 emeralds and over 1,300 diamonds, is missing one of its eight golden eagles. However, most of its precious stones remain intact.
And this is the part most people miss: the Louvre plans to restore the crown to its original state without any need for reconstruction. An expert committee, led by the museum's president, will oversee this delicate process.
The heist itself was a well-planned operation. The gang used a stolen vehicle with a mechanical lift to access the Galerie d'Apollon via a balcony near the River Seine. Two thieves cut through the window with power tools, threatened the guards, and then targeted the display cases containing the royal jewels.
Prosecutors claim the thieves were in and out in under four minutes, making their escape on scooters waiting outside. Police have arrested four suspects believed to be the thieves, but the mastermind behind this daring raid remains at large.
The seven other pieces of jewellery taken, including Eugenie's diamond tiara and various necklaces, earrings, and brooches, are still missing.
So, what do you think? Is this a story of a successful heist or a near-miss for the thieves? Could the crown's intricate design have saved it from being stolen? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
