Pedro Acosta has made a striking declaration regarding KTM's 2026 MotoGP bike, stating that the extensive upgrades introduced over the winter season make it feel as if the manufacturer has constructed an entirely new motorcycle from the ground up.
Despite ongoing speculation about Acosta's future with KTM amidst the upcoming regulatory changes, there is a growing sense of optimism within the team about their prospects for the current racing season. This newfound confidence stems from a vigorous development initiative undertaken during the winter months, where engineers at KTM’s facility in Mattighofen focused on maximizing the performance capabilities of the existing RC16 model.
In contrast to the challenges faced prior to the 2025 season—when KTM's financial struggles led to a factory closure and stymied significant updates to their MotoGP prototype—the 2026 version, while not entirely re-engineered in a technical sense, has undergone such substantial modifications that Acosta describes it as feeling "completely new" compared to its predecessor from the previous year.
"At the start of last year, we arrived at the Malaysia test with some minor updates for my 2024 bike, but nothing really groundbreaking until we reached the middle of the season," Acosta explained after participating in KTM's online launch event. "This year, I see a much larger leap forward—maybe not two leaps, but certainly a bike that feels like it’s been built from zero. That instills a great deal of confidence.
"Moreover, the overall atmosphere at the factory has changed significantly compared to a year ago. You can sense the difference in people’s demeanor; everyone appears more relaxed and self-assured, which is invigorating."
Echoing Acosta’s enthusiasm, Brad Binder also noted improvements in the team’s development strategy, emphasizing that KTM arrived at the Valencia test last November with a far more robust package and anticipates even more enhancements for the upcoming Sepang test. "Looking back to this time last year, we had far fewer components to evaluate," he remarked. "This year, we have a plethora of significant items to test when we get to Malaysia. Last year was largely a continuation of what we had previously, but this year seems to offer fresh innovations.
"We noticed some minor advancements during our time in Valencia, so I’m optimistic that after this off-season, we will be prepared to take a significant step forward.
KTM's MotoGP chief, Pit Beirer, described the recent off-season as a return to normalcy, highlighting that a stable budget enabled a comprehensive push for development throughout the winter. "It’s no secret that the company’s previous difficulties impacted our entire MotoGP project, causing a considerable setback for us," he acknowledged.
"However, the fact that we managed to recover from that setback and re-establish ourselves as contenders for podium finishes in MotoGP fills me with immense pride for our team and everyone who remained dedicated to overcoming these challenges, showcasing a strong spirit. Now, we are in a position to prepare for 2026 in a standard way, equipping our riders with new parts available in Valencia and allowing them to select their preferences for Sepang.
"I genuinely feel we are well-prepared for 2026. This year, we enjoyed a stable budget and effective planning. After taking a break over Christmas, everyone had the chance to recharge and gear up for the bike assembly process, bringing us much closer to a state of normalcy. I feel positive about the potential advancements on the 2026 bike."
