Keith Andrews FURIOUS! Ref's Controversial Call Costs Brentford vs. Man City | Carabao Cup (2026)

The Carabao Cup dreams of Brentford, led by Keith Andrews, were dashed last night after a 2-0 defeat against Manchester City in the quarter-final at the Etihad Stadium. It was a tough night, and the loss has left a bitter taste, especially considering a controversial refereeing decision. But here's where it gets controversial...

Even with Pep Guardiola making some changes to his starting lineup, Manchester City was the clear favorite. Goals from Rayan Cherki and Savinho, one in each half, sealed their place in the semi-final draw. However, the game might have taken a different turn if a crucial call had gone Brentford's way early on.

Brentford might feel they were hard done by, as the game could have looked very different if Manchester City had been down to ten men just 15 minutes in. Abdukodir Khusanov was perhaps lucky to escape a straight red card after a foul on Kevin Schade just outside the box. The referee deemed the foul worthy of only a yellow card.

This decision has sparked debate, with many questioning whether Khusanov should have been sent off. Imagine the impact of playing against ten men for the remaining 75 minutes!

Keith Andrews was clearly frustrated after the match, admitting he didn't understand the referee's explanation for not issuing a red card. He stated, "I’m very quick to defend officials generally, it’s such a difficult job, but that was one they didn’t get right. The explanation was that the touch being too far away from goal doesn’t quite sit well with me after watching it back because he’s clean through on goal… If it’s a red card it’s a big advantage for us obviously, but we’ll never know."

A cup semi-final would have been a great reward for Brentford's efforts this season. Despite this setback, they still have plenty to play for in the coming weeks. Their upcoming Premier League fixtures include a match against Wolves this weekend, followed by games against Bournemouth and Spurs during the festive period.

What do you think? Was the referee's decision correct? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below! Did the referee make the right call? Or should Khusanov have been sent off? Let's discuss!
