While a scanning app is undeniably convenient, there's a significant caveat: the app marketplace is unfortunately flooded with options that are, to put it mildly, a chaotic mess. Many apps are packed with intrusive ads, sneak in privacy-infringing features, or engage in dubious practices like secretly using your scanned documents to train AI models, often with only a tiny, easily missed disclaimer.

Getting started is incredibly straightforward. Simply install the app – it's currently available for Android devices and can be found on both the Google Play Store and F-Droid, a trusted repository for open-source Android applications.
To begin your scanning journey, have your document ready and place it on a flat surface in a well-lit area. Then, simply point your phone's camera at the first page. You'll see a green box appear, which you can adjust to precisely outline the portion of the document you wish to capture. Once you're satisfied, snap the picture!
If your document has multiple pages, just tap the plus button to add more. You can repeat this process as many times as needed to scan your entire document, seamlessly creating a multipage PDF.
When you're finished, you have the flexibility to export your scanned pages as either a single, consolidated PDF file or as individual JPEG images.
Now, a few tips for optimal scanning: lighting is paramount. To avoid unsightly shadows of your phone on the scan, ensure your phone isn't positioned between the light source and the document. I've found that rooms with diffuse lighting – whether from multiple lamps or ample natural sunlight from windows – yield the best results. Also, try your best to keep the paper document as flat as possible to minimize any distortions in the final scan.
This application is wonderfully simple. While there are a couple of features I personally wish were included, such as the ability to edit pages after they've been photographed or some form of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to make scanned text searchable, its core strength lies in its unfettered functionality.
But the major pro of this software—that it does its job without bothering you—is the killer feature here. What does it say about the current state of our technological ecosystem that such a straightforward approach is so remarkable? A great deal, actually.
We all look to our phones as tools, instruments to accomplish specific tasks. We tend to view the apps we install in the same light. The challenge, however, is that many app developers aren't primarily in the 'tool-making' business.
