Toronto's Long-Awaited Transit Project: Eglinton Crosstown LRT Finally Opens!
After years of anticipation, the Eglinton Crosstown is ready to roll! This Sunday marks a significant milestone as the much-delayed light rail transit (LRT) line officially opens its doors to the public, offering free rides on its inaugural day.
But here's the catch: the opening will be gradual. TTC CEO Mandeep Lali announced at the board meeting that Line 5, as it will be known, will begin service in phases starting February 8th. This strategy, according to Lali, is to ensure a smooth launch and allow for performance monitoring and controlled upgrades.
And this is where it gets interesting: The phased opening is a direct response to the challenges faced by Line 6, which has struggled with reliability issues. By taking a gradual approach, the TTC aims to learn from past mistakes and ensure a more seamless experience for riders.
Line 5 will initially operate on a reduced schedule, with transit signal priority (TSP) activated to give light rail vehicles priority at intersections. This feature will be rolled out in phases across Lines 5 and 6 by the second quarter, with further enhancements planned for March and May to improve software and speed.
The Eglinton Crosstown spans 25 stops, connecting Mount Dennis in the west to Kennedy Station in Scarborough. Interestingly, over half of these stops are underground, while the remaining 11 are above ground, potentially causing delays due to traffic lights—a concern echoed by transit advocacy group TTC Riders.
The project's journey has been a lengthy one, with construction starting in 2011 and an initial opening date set for 2020. However, various setbacks pushed the timeline back. Alongside the phased opening, 35 bus routes will change, 16 of which were already implemented last fall.
As for ticketing, customers will now pay at surface platforms rather than on the vehicles. TTC Riders, while welcoming the opening, remain cautious, hoping Line 5 won't suffer the same reliability issues as Line 6. They advocate for a public inquiry into the delays, believing Torontonians deserve answers and that learning from these challenges is crucial to prevent future setbacks.
