China's nuclear power expansion continues with a bang! The latest development is sure to spark excitement and debate in the energy sector.
The construction of a new nuclear reactor, Ningde Unit 6, has officially begun with the pouring of the first concrete. This marks a significant milestone in China's ambitious nuclear energy plans. But here's where it gets interesting: this is the second of two advanced HPR1000 reactors being built at the same site, showcasing China's commitment to this technology.
The project, located in Fujian province, was approved by the State Council in July 2023, and its twin, Ningde Unit 5, started its construction journey just a year later. China General Nuclear (CGN) proudly announced the recent progress, emphasizing the full-scale construction commencement of Unit 6.
The existing Ningde plant already boasts four operational reactors, each with a capacity of 1,018 MWe, which have been powering homes and businesses since 2013. The new units, 5 and 6, will utilize HPR1000 pressurized water reactor technology, generating an impressive 1,210 MWe each. That's a significant boost in power generation!
CGN is on a roll, with 20 nuclear power units under their construction management, at various stages of development. Four units are in the commissioning phase, two are ready for equipment installation, another four are in civil construction, and ten are eagerly awaiting the start of construction with the pouring of their first concrete.
And this is the part that might surprise you: Unit 5 is expected to be operational by 2029, with Unit 6 close behind in 2030. This rapid progress raises questions about the future of nuclear energy and its role in meeting global energy demands.
