Symptom Experience and Management Needs of Breast Cancer Patients under Endocrine Therapy: A Qualitative Study
Introduction:
Breast cancer, a pervasive and deadly disease among women, has become a global health concern. The treatment and care of breast cancer patients have significant economic and emotional impacts on families and society. This study aims to explore the symptom experiences and management needs of breast cancer patients undergoing endocrine therapy, a crucial aspect of breast cancer treatment. By understanding these needs, we can develop tailored interventions to improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
Methodology:
A qualitative descriptive study was conducted, involving in-depth interviews with 20 breast cancer patients receiving endocrine therapy. The participants were selected through purposive sampling with a maximum variation strategy. The study design, data collection, and analysis followed rigorous protocols to ensure credibility, transferability, reliability, and confirmability.
Results:
The study revealed four overarching themes: (1) Substantial Multidimensional Disease Burden, (2) Individual Variations in Symptom Coping Styles, (3) Diverse Symptom Management Dilemmas, and (4) Personalized Symptom Management Needs. The findings highlight the complex physical, psychological, and social burdens faced by patients, as well as the diverse coping strategies and management needs.
Discussion:
The study provides valuable insights into the symptom experiences and management needs of breast cancer patients undergoing endocrine therapy. The findings emphasize the importance of patient-centered care and the need for tailored interventions to address the multidimensional burdens and systemic challenges faced by patients. The study also highlights the role of qualitative research in understanding the subjective experiences and coping mechanisms of patients.
Conclusion:
This qualitative study sheds light on the symptom experiences and management needs of breast cancer patients undergoing endocrine therapy. The findings emphasize the importance of patient-centered care and the need for tailored interventions to address the multidimensional burdens and systemic challenges faced by patients. Further research is needed to develop effective strategies for symptom management and to improve the quality of life for breast cancer patients.
