AT THE GATES UNVEILS The Ghost Of A Future Dead and Drops The Fever Mask as First Hint
Swedish melodic death pioneers AT THE GATES have announced their eighth studio album, The Ghost Of A Future Dead, set for release on April 24, 2026 through Century Media Records.
This record follows 2021’s bold The Nightmare of Being and serves as a heartfelt tribute to frontman Tomas Lindberg, who passed away in September 2025 after a battle with cancer.
The Ghost Of A Future Dead was tracked and mixed by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden, with artwork by Robert Samsonowitz. The album runs 42 minutes and 30 seconds in total, and the tracklist is as follows:
- The Fever Mask (03:12)
- The Dissonant Void (02:47)
- Det Oerhörda (03:35)
- A Ritual Of Waste (03:35)
- In Dark Distortion (03:50)
- Of Interstellar Death (03:45)
- Tomb Of Heaven (03:53)
- Parasitical Hive (04:34)
- The Unfathomable (04:07)
- The Phantom Gospel (02:44)
- Förgängligheten (02:41)
- Black Hole Emission (03:39)
In a formal statement, the band expressed pride in sharing the forthcoming project, noting that The Ghost Of A Future Dead was completed in the studio more than two years ago and will be released as planned on April 24, 2026. They emphasized that, in line with Tomas Lindberg’s wishes, the album’s title, sound mix, track order, artwork, and overall presentation remain faithful to his vision. The group described the record as a distillation of AT THE GATES’ core essence—ferocious energy paired with crushing melodies—and framed it as Tomas Lindberg’s lasting legacy.
The introductory single, The Fever Mask, was released in conjunction with a tribute video to Tomas Lindberg created by longtime collaborator Patric Ullaeus. The band called The Fever Mask one of the final songs written for the project, noting its fit as both the opening track and the single, capturing the band’s signature blend of raw vitality, memorable melodies, and Tomas’s evocative lyrics.

Tomas Lindberg passed away at 52 after his cancer diagnosis, which was revealed in August 2025 to have progressed despite ongoing treatment. The illness had been previously diagnosed in December 2023, leading to extensive surgery that removed a portion of the roof of his mouth, followed by radiation therapy. Early 2025 brought a resurgence of the disease, with doctors noting a set of remaining cancer cells that were not amenable to surgery or radiation. In a message released on August 15, 2025, Lindberg spoke candidly about the prolonged silence from the band and reflected on his fifteen months of treatment, surgery, and recovery efforts, while acknowledging the difficult path ahead. He shared that the vocal tracks for the album had been recorded prior to much of the album’s other production, ensuring the project could proceed even if touring or additional performances became uncertain.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Lindberg’s condition, AT THE GATES chose not to delay The Ghost Of A Future Dead. They viewed the album as a tribute and a testament to their creative collaboration, describing it as a return to their roots and a fusion of the approaches from their two most recent records with Anders Björler involved. The band suggested the new material nods to a blend of the styles found on Slaughter Of The Soul and At War With Reality, while still pushing forward with their distinctive sound.
Background context: AT THE GATES’ career includes the landmark Slaughter Of The Soul (1995), widely regarded as a defining work in extreme metal. After an initial dissolution and subsequent reform in 2008, the band members pursued other projects, with several lineup changes over the years. Founding guitarist Anders Björler rejoined in 2022 after a hiatus, and guitarist Jonas Stålhammar exited in 2022, having joined in 2017 as a replacement for Anders Björler. The most recent studio effort prior to The Ghost Of A Future Dead was The Nightmare Of Being, released in 2021. The group’s earlier 2018 release, To Drink From The Night Itself, marked the first record without Anders Björler.
This announcement invites fans to reflect on the band’s resilience and artistic perseverance in the face of personal tragedy, while also inviting discussion on how such profound experiences shape a metal legacy.
