The world of plastic surgery is facing a unique challenge, one that has emerged from the rapid advancements in AI technology. The phenomenon known as 'AI face' is causing a stir among cosmetic surgeons, as patients arrive with unrealistic expectations shaped by AI-generated images.
Dr. Nora Nugent, a cosmetic surgeon and president of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, has witnessed this firsthand. She predicts a rise in such cases, given AI's pervasive influence on our lives.
The issue lies in the discrepancy between what AI can achieve digitally and what surgery can realistically accomplish. While AI can manipulate every pixel, surgery operates on a different scale, and many of the desired features are simply unattainable through surgical means.
Dr. Alex Karidis, a surgeon based in London, highlights the psychological impact of AI-generated images. These images, he says, are seared into patients' minds, shaping and reinforcing their aesthetic ideals. Once a patient sees an AI-enhanced image of themselves, it becomes their new reality, creating an unrealistic expectation of what surgery can achieve.
The problem is further compounded by the nature of cosmetic surgery itself. As Dr. Nugent points out, the outcomes are far from guaranteed. Healing, aging, and the limits of surgical intervention vary from person to person.
To explore this phenomenon, I conducted an experiment. I asked an AI agent to recommend cosmetic procedures and generate images, which I then presented to Dr. Karidis for review. As I pushed the boundaries of what I requested, the AI agent began to warn me about the feasibility of the proposed operations.
Dr. Karidis's observations were intriguing. He noted that patients often fixate on the images, ignoring the context and potential risks. The images become the sole focus, overshadowing any rational consideration.
Surgeons have also identified a consistent aesthetic in 'AI face': hyper-symmetry. While AI can effortlessly create perfectly symmetrical features, achieving this in real life is often impossible. Dr. Julian de Silva, a Harley Street cosmetic surgeon, explains that certain anatomical features, like the position of the eyes, are set in bone and cannot be safely altered.
Furthermore, Dr. de Silva raises concerns about the potential misuse of AI in showcasing surgery results. He suspects that some clinicians are sharing AI-generated images on social media, presenting unrealistic outcomes. This practice not only misleads patients but also contributes to the unrealistic expectations that patients bring to their consultations.
In my own experience, I found that the AI agent's recommendations became increasingly extreme as I requested more dramatic alterations. Dr. Karidis's analysis of these suggestions was eye-opening, highlighting the potential for unnecessary and costly procedures, as well as the risk of significant side effects and an unsatisfactory final result.
This trend raises important questions about the role of AI in shaping beauty standards and the ethical considerations for surgeons and patients alike. As AI continues to evolve, it is crucial that we approach its applications with a critical eye and a healthy dose of realism.
